The importance of Geographical Information Systems?

A geographic information system (GIS) integrates hardware, software, and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and displaying all forms of geographically referenced information. (source: http://www.gis.com)

GISs are important for each and every field in the world. They can represent more data rather than in paper based maps. The geographical information is stored in the map as layers in most of the GISs. Each layer represents a particular theme or feature of the map. For and example one layer can be used to represent the roads in a particular area while another layer is used to represent all the lakes in the same area. Yet another could represent all the cities.

GISs help for some of the decision making systems. They can help organizations to manage their tasks in an efficient and effective way while earning profits. In another way , it can offer job opportunities for most of the people. GIS is helping thousands of Organizations around the world. For an example: Archaeology, Agriculture, Banking, Defense and Intelligence, Electric and Gas. Engineering, Health and Human etc.

Ontology ....

The concepts with in a domain can be defined in a formal way and the relationships among those concepts all together called as ontology. There are many definitions for this term. The American Heritage Dictionary (4th ed.) provides the following definition: "The branch of metaphysics that deals with the nature of being." Tom Gruber says that "an ontology is a specification of a conceptualization."

JADE provides extensive support for Ontologies. It can be used to model distributed “agent” systems.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village, though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods an frozen lake

The darkest evening darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound's the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

By Robert Frost (1874-1963)
